 What is necessity of Tamil conference destroying Tamil Elam?

An AIADMK functionary, Pazha Karuppaiah, was attacked by a six-member gang, which stormed his house on [27-6-2010] Sunday afternoon and beat him up with sticks. Police said the miscreants attacked Karuppaiah and ransacked his house in Royapettah in the heart of the city. He suffered injuries on his mouth and was admitted to the Royapettah government hospital. Alleging that they were DMK sympathisers, Karuppaiah, the AIADMK’s literary wing secretary, said his attackers condemned his recent articles in Tamil magazines, which were critical of the Tamil conference organised by the ruling DMK government.


AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa has strongly condemned the attack, alleging that DMK men were behind it. In a statement, Jayalalithaa accused DMK sympathisers of barging into Karuppaiah’s house and unleashing “a murderous attack” on him as well as his family members. He was attacked for expressing his views about the World Classical Tamil Conference and exposing the betrayal of the Tamil people by chief minister M Karunanidhi,


she said. “Karuppaiah is an excellent writer and a Tamil scholar. He had expressed his views and arguments about the self-eulogising conference held in the guise of world classical Tamil meet,” said Jayalalithaa, adding that the constitution allowed people to be informed about a government’s shortfall.


But the attempt to silence critics through violence is totally undemocratic,’’ she said. Pointing out those speakers in the classical Tamil conference had criticised her, Jayalalithaa said others had the same right to criticise the conference as well as Karunanidhi.


Later, Karuppaiah told reporters he had received a call at 2.30pm by a man who introduced himself as Tamilvanan and sought to meet him. “Soon after the call, the gang barged into my house and attacked me,” he said. The Royapettah police have registered a case and launched a hunt for the gang.
