SriLankan atrocity, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon effigy was burnt.
Sri Lankans have staged an angry demonstration outside the United Nations office in the capital, Colombo. They have burnt an effigy of the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, in protest at his launch of a human rights panel looking at the Sri Lankan war.
The rally was presided over by Wimal Weerawansa, Minister of Construction and Housing, who is urging people to besiege the UN compound in retaliation.
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon: The Secretary-General finds it unacceptable that the Sri Lankan authorities have failed to prevent the disruption of the normal functioning of the United Nations offices in Colombo as a result of unruly protests organized and led by a Cabinet Minister of the Government.
In light of the evolving situation, he is recalling the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Neil Buhne, to New York for consultations. He has also decided that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Centre in Colombo will be closed.
The Secretary-General calls upon the Government of Sri Lanka to live up to its responsibilities towards the United Nations as host country, so as to ensure continuation of the vital work of the Organization to assist the people of Sri Lanka without any further hindrance.
Russia and China, both of which for geo-strategic reasons have expressed support for the Rajapaksa government’s attacks on the UN for naming even an advisory panel on war crimes in Sri Lanka. Both sell weapons to the Rajapaksas; China is developing a major port, reportedly with prison labor.
However, will China and Russia be willing to support these attacks on UN staff led by government minister Wimal Weerawansa? Russia and China have learned a bitter lesson for supporting IC against Sudan. They will never do that mistake again. Anyhow, it is the duty of India to condemn the attacks of Sri Lankan Minister on Ban Ki-Moon and his staff and if India does not do it, now Rajapakshe will not have even any fear to threaten India with the help of military power of China.
