Jaya storms Alagiri bastion. Part-2.
Brushing aside a spate of threats to her life, AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa addressed a mammoth crowd at Madurai on Monday, taunting and throwing barbs at DMK strongman and Union minister M K Alagiri on his home turf and launching a blistering attack on the DMK regime.
“I received several threat letters that I will be killed if I come to Madurai. Because they say this is the bastion of the ‘braveheart’ (as Alagiri is called by his followers). Is Madurai Alagiri’s family property? I will not be cowed down by such threats. I am standing here in front of you and have proved who really has a brave heart,” she thundered amidst cheers from thousands of supporters who had thronged the rally venue.
It was a show of might by the opposition AIADMK, ahead of the crucial Assembly elections, with Jayalalithaa declaring that the countdown for AIADMK rule had already begun and the people had realised that the ‘two-leaves’ (AIADMK’s election symbol) was the only herbal medicine to cure all the ills of Tamil Nadu. She spoke of capturing power, assailed chief minister M Karunanidhi’s family for having its “tentacles” around several trades, especially the film industry, and accused him of allowing a parallel government based in Madurai.
