Former chief minister M Karunanidhi strongly defended his daughter Kanimozhi on[20-5-2011] Friday, saying that it was he who insisted on her being made a director in Kalaignar TV. “Though my daughter did not approve of my decision, she agreed because I, as her father, insisted,” said Karunanidhi in a nine-page statement, laced with strong emotions, issued on Saturday night. “Besides agreeing to my decision to induct her into the board of directors of Kaliagnar TV, she has not committed any crime,” he said.


As a mere shareholder of the company, she was not privy to every decision taken by the board, said Karunanidhi. Then why Karunanidhi not told the CBI that he is only responsible to reply in the 214 crore scam.


Karuna added “I am not prepared to go into the reasons for the DMK’s defeat in the assembly elections,” Karunanidhi said. “It could be because I had conceded so many seats for allies and also the constituencies that they demanded or because of the antidemocratic decisions taken by the Election Commission only in Tamil Nadu. But I do not want to speculate on any of these reasons,” he said. “It is a vendetta against the DMK from Kanyakumari to the Himalayas,” he said cryptically, adding, “There are people who want to finish off the DMK and my family. But we will win the final war.”


To our knowledge the people says that the Election Commissioner has acted fairly and several thousands of people voted in this election without any fear.


If Karunanidhi says that her daughter was innocent and he was the main reason for being made her as a Director in Kalaignar TV, then Karunanidhi must give a affidavit before the CBI Court and release her daughter from the case telling that he was the person to be charged in this case for all the offences. That action will only show his affection towards his daughter.

DMK MP Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV MD and CEO Sharad Kumar have been arrested in the 2G spectrum scam case. A Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court dismissed the bail petition of Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar in the case on [20-5-3011] Friday following which they were taken into custody.


While rejecting their bail petition Judge OP Saini ordered their "forthwith" arrest and directed the duo to appear before it at 10 am on Saturday. Kanimozhi and Kumar will be lodged in Delhi's Tihar jail.


"Considering the magnitude of the crime and enormity of the allegations character of evidence on record and the apprehension that witness may be influenced if on bail, I have no hesitation in holding that prima facie case for bail is not made out. Bail applications are without merit and the same are dismissed," Judge Saini observed.


The 144-page order pointed out that most of the witnesses against Kanimozhi were the employees of Kalaignar TV and hence the possibility of they being influenced cannot be ruled out.


The court also rejected Kanimozhi's contention that she should be grated bail because she is a woman. "Considering the magnitude of the crime and nature of allegations against her I cannot give her that consideration," said the judge.


Kanimozhi will be lodged in Tihar's Jail No. 6 while Kumar go to Jail No. 4, which also has Commonwealth Games scam accused Suresh Kalmadi, Surjeet Lal and ASG Prasad. She has also been charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act for taking bribe through Kalaignar TV - a channel run by DMK - in which the bribe of Rs 200 crore was routed from Shahid Usman Balwa's firm DB Realty.

AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa wrested power from the DMK in Tamil Nadu on Friday 13-5-2011 with a landslide win, crushing chief minister M Karunanidhi's hopes of heading the state for the sixth time.


.Jayalalitha delivered a blow to Alagiri's influence in south Tamil Nadu, wiping out his candidates in Madurai.


The factors behind the DMK’s humiliating defeat were the involvement of its leaders in the One crore seventy six lakhs 2G scam and the Karunanidhi family controlling all party affairs.


The comprehensive AIADMK win was set to deny the DMK the status of a recognized opposition party as the DMDK, headed by actor Vijayakanth, and the Left parties have said that they will offer "constructive opposition" to the AIADMK government. What this means is that in the new assembly, Karunanidhi will not even be the leader of the Opposition because the honour is likely to go to Vijayakanth, whose party bagged 29 more seats than the DMK.


Jayalalithaa’s victory not only reinforced the cyclical voting pattern of Tamil Nadu but also blew away the perception of a rural-urban divide that the DMK was banking on to see it through on the strength of the freebies and welfare schemes t felt had touched almost every household in the state.


The Congress, a DMK ally, won only five seats, a big fall from the 34 it had bagged in 2006. The poor showing means that the Congress will not be able to get its way in the Rajya Sabha elections. Significantly, the term of union shipping minister GK Vasan, a Rajya Sabha member, ends in August and the Congress will not be in a position to get him elected to the Upper House.


Addressing a press conference after her resounding victory, Jayalalithaa said her priority was to restore the rule of law in the state and rebuild Tamil Nadu’s economy, which the “outgoing government has left in ruins”. She said it would be a “formidable challenge”, which she was used to, referring to her earlier returns as chief minister.


It is the people ambition that Jayalalitha must revive the true Democracy in Tamil Nadu.

Faced with the prospect of being jailed for alleged complicity in the 2G spectrum allocation scam, Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi sought to distance herself from the main accused, former telecom minister A Raja, as evident on Friday[6-5-2011].


Arguing why she should not be jailed, Kanimozhi’s counsel Ram Jethmalani sharply differentiated her from Raja, maintaining that she was not party to the transfer of Rs 200 crore that the DMK-controlled Kalaignar TV got from DB Group, allegedly in return for the licence allotted to Swan Telecom. “Let us assume that at his instance (Raja’s), Rs 200 crore was routed to the TV channel. What is the offence committed by me? I am only a shareholder,” the veteran lawyer argued on behalf of Kanimozhi. “It is A Raja who could be accused of conspiracy, not Kanimozhi,” Jethmalani said.


He qualified his argument by emphasizing that he was quoting the CBI on the fund transfer, and he did not want to prejudice the case of other accused. But the argument clearly was that while others could be guilty, Kanmozhi wasn’t.


“I do not suggest that everybody is innocent in this case. But so far as I am concerned, I was not handling the day-to-day affairs of the company, which have been mentioned in the chargesheet,” Jethmalani said as he sought to disentangle his client from Raja as well as Kalaignar TV’s managing director Sharad Kumar.


On November 14 2010, when Raja was pressured to resign as telecom minister, Karunanidhi hailed him as "one who would always retained the party's confidence". The DMK supreme went on to add that "Raja had discharged his duties with honesty, fairness and sense of duty". But that was before his own daughter was indicted in the scam. Now A.Raja becomes the victim for the sake of kanimozhi.


On 7-5-2011 The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has opposed Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi's bail plea, claiming that she is the controlling mind behind Kalaignar TV. The CBI also pleaded in the court to send Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV CEO Sharad Kumar to judicial custody.


After a long argument by Special Public Prosecutor UU Lalit, who appeared for the CBI, Judge OP Saini reserved the hearing on bail plea of Kanimozhi and others till May 14. The court also asked Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar to appear before the court daily till May 14.


However, Vijay Agarwal, lawyer for co-accused Asif Balwa and Rajeev Agarwal, said that the CBI was adopting a "hostile" attitude against his clients while not arresting Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar who had allegedly received bribes. We have to wait and see what the justice going to do?

The DMK high level committee meeting on 26-4-2011 over Kanimozhi being charged in the 2G spectrum scam, but the resolution adopted by the party gave no indication of any ferment. Dismissing the inclusion of Kanimozhi in the charge sheet as a political move to defame the DMK and unseat the chief minister, the meeting resolved to take recourse to legal means.


A suggestion by a member to break ties with the Congress was ignored by the DMK patriarch who had initially showed signs of anguish and anger over the inability of the ruling Congress at the Centre to prevent Kanimozhi’s indictment. Even when he was quizzed by the media later on the CBI’s controversial handling of the Bofors gun scandal, Karunanidhi could not be provoked into making any outburst. Instead, the DMK’s resolution at the meeting blamed the media and ‘certain political parties’ for trying to break the alliance with the Congress.


Karunanidhi’s sons MK Alagiri and MK Stalin are understood to have advised him to approach the issue practically so as not to jeopardize the future of the party or his daughter. DMK sources said committee member AL Subramanian advocated a resolution empowering Karunanidhi and party general secretary K Anbazhagan to decide on continuance of alliance with the Congress.


However, Karunanidhi felt that such a resolution would backfire should it come to power. Besides, it was important to get moral support from its ally. Karunanidhi still looks up to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi as a “Thiyaga Thiruvilaku”, a saviour and light of sacrifice. The resolution finally adopted at the meeting questioned the very basis of estimation of the loss to the national exchequer due to the spectrum allocation and expressed surprise at how Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV managing director Sharad Kumar had been implicated even though the Rs 200 crore lent to the channel had been repaid with interest .


We want to bring it to the notice of Karunanidhi that how Jayalalitha was targeted for nothing during 1989. During the budget session of the assembly in 1989 as an opposition leader, Jayalalitha said Karunanidhi had no moral right to be CM. All hell broke loose and she was manhandled, with some DMK members allegedly trying to pull at her Sari. There are photographs of her with disheveled hair and tears in her eyes. That day, she must have sworn revenge, like Draupadi, resolving that she would re-enter the assembly only as chief minister. This incident is the root cause of her hatred for Karunanidhi.


The DMK took the unthinkable decision of joining the BJP, a Hindutva party, mainly to checkmate Jayalalitha. After she had faced humiliation in the assembly, during the next election in 1991, she told people that Karunanidhi was a Duryodhana and there was a Dusshasana among the legislators who had tried to disrobe her. The electorate responded by giving her thumping majority to Jayalalitha. Karunanidhi may now remember who are the Duriodhana and the dutchadhanas?
