Anna Hazare's anti-corruption campaign, who were demanding a strong Jan Lokpal, was received support from almost the entire India.


Anna Hazare who was arrested in the morning of 16-8-2011 refused to leave Tihar jail on 16-8-2011 mid night after the police withdrew the case against him and his seven arrested associates and a magistrate issued a release warrant for all eight.


Hazare had the police and jail authorities scratching their heads by saying he would not leave the jail until the police gave him an undertaking allowing him to hold his indefinite fast at JP Park without conditions.


Senior police officers rushed to Tihar latter to try and persuade Hazare to leave the jail, while a crowd of amused residents from nearby areas, including women and children, turned out before the gates to witness the fun.


Hazare said he would go to JP Park straight from the jail after getting an undertaking from us. Around midnight, Hazare was resting on a sofa in the office of director-general (prisons) Neeraj Kumar while jail and police officers sat in chairs around him, trying to talk him round. Hazare has refused dinner saying he is on fast.


“Both Hazare and (Arvind) Kejriwal have refused to do so. We cannot force them to sign as it will create more trouble for the government,” the jail official said.


Only one of the jailed Team Hazare members, Manish Sisodia, signed on the release order and came out. He then sat on a dharna outside the prison with hundreds of supporters who shouted anti-government slogans.

“I have come out to convey his message to the people. Hazare will leave the jail only after getting written permission to hold the protest at JP Park. Else, he will continue to be there,” Sisodia said.

The emotive Sri Lankan Tamils issue figured in the state assembly on 11-8-2010 with chief minister J Jayalalithaa insisting that India convey its protest against the “motivated” remarks of Sri Lanka defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa on the resolution passed by the assembly recently on the plight of Tamils living in the island nation.

In a recent interview to a private channel, Gotabaya Rajapaksa had hit out at Jayalalithaa for demanding that Lankan leaders, including President Mahinda Rajapaksa, be brought to trial for alleged war crimes. “This (resolutions passed in the Tamil Nadu assembly) must be for her (Jayalalithaa) to gain political advantage,” he said.


Replying to a special call attention moved by opposition parties, including the DMDK, the CPI and the CPM, Jayalalithaa said, “One suspect that Gotabaya Rajapaksa is encouraged to give such an interview because of the inaction of the Centre on the resolution passed by the assembly. This government will not rest until Sri Lankan Tamils are rehabilitated and live in conditions on a par with other Sri Lankans.” She assured members that her government would continue to take diplomatic steps and would not relent until a solution is found.


Recalling an earlier resolution urging the Centre to impose economic sanctions on Sri Lanka, Jayalalithaa said it was passed based on a UN committee report on alleged human rights violations during the final conflict between the armed forces and the LTTE. On June 8, the assembly passed a resolution demanding that the Centre take action to get all those responsible for largescale civilian deaths during the ethnic war declared as ‘war criminals’ by the International Court of Justice. It also demanded economic sanctions against the island nation to pressure the country into giving equal status and dignity to Tamils.

If, as the Sri Lankan government claimed, there were no war crimes, why were they hesitant about facing the International Court of Justice, wondered Jayalalithaa. When former chief minister M Karunanidhi observed a fast and organised a human chain protest demanding ceasefire of the war in Sri Lanka, the government there did not react. But now it has raised a hue and cry over the resolution passed by the present Government.

Former telecom minister Arun Shourie has stirred up a storm by alleging that a key official in the Prime Minister 's Office had wanted the PMO kept at "arm's length" on the 2G issue.


Shourie was reacting to former telecom minister and 2G accused A Raja's contention in court on Monday[25-7-2011] that he had discussed the 2G spectrum allocation issue with Singh and Chidambaram .Shourie claimed that he was basing his statement on the Prime Minister's file on this issue.


Shourie claimed he was referring to a file noting by the Principal Secretary to the PM on January 15, 2008. Shourie said, "He (the official) wrote that the PM wants this informally shared with the Department Telecom and does not want any formal communications. The PM wants the PMO to be kept at an arm's length."


The "arm's length" reference was presumably to flurry of letters written by stating that the PM had been informed and that he (Raja) had the benefit the advice of the Finance Minister.


Shourie's statement raises a question mark over the denials by Sibal and Chidambaram that only the issue of dilution of stake by Unitech and Swan Telecom were discussed in the presence of the PM, and not any divestment.


Political observers said if Shourie's contention was correct, then there was a question mark over why the PMO wanted to be officially kept at a distance. "This would mean they were aware of Raja's actions," an observer said.


Shourie claimed that the government argument about the Prime Minister being concerned about dilution of equity by the licence-holders and not divesting does not stand.


"If it had been in line with foreign equity policy of the government why has this government issued a show cause notice of penalty to Etisalat for Rs 7,100 crore for violating FEMA?" Shourie asked.

on spectrum allocation while dealing with 2G allocation, Mr. Shourie said: "He is completely wrong in saying he was following NDA policy.
I can show he was not following any policy, procedure or principle."

"It is a very interesting point (fist-come-first-served-basis). It is a red herring shown to the public. The issue is that (former telecom minister) A Raja made money irrespective of whether it was a first-come-first-served policy or not.

Former Telecom Minister A. Raja on Monday defended himself against corruption charges in the 2G scam, saying he had not done anything wrong and was merely following the policies pursued by his predecessors and the NDA government.


The 47-year-old DMK MP pleaded before Special CBI Judge O.P. Saini that there was nothing wrong in his decision of not auctioning 2G spectrum as he had "implemented only what I have inherited."


Senior Advocate Sushil Kumar, appearing for Mr. Raja, said if Mr. Raja is being prosecuted for following a certain policy then all Telecom Ministers since 1993 are liable to be prosecuted as they too followed the same policy.


"If policy pursued by me was wrong, then all former Telecom Ministers since 1993 should also be in jail with me (Raja)," the counsel said while opposing framing of charges against Mr. Raja.


He said, "As Telecom Minster Arun Shourie distributed 26 licences while Dayanidhi Maran distributed 25 and I (Raja) distributed 122 licences. Numbers make no difference, however, it is to be noted that none of them auctioned the spectrum.


"If they had done no wrong, why am I being questioned? Let them deny that they have not done what I did. I was just following the 2003 Cabinet decision that is not to auction 2G spectrum. If I am following the law, I am not liable to be prosecuted. Infact, I should be rewarded."


Raja also dragged the names of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram. He said the PM was aware of the telecom decisions and even challenged Manmohan Singh. It is not known, who has advised Raja in the D.M.K. party to show his finger against P.M.


Prime Minister on the belief that his cabinet Ministers will function according to the oath they have taken, he is signing all the papers. The oath taken by the Ministers is “that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established, that I will uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India and that I will faithfully discharge the duty upon which I am about to enter.”

After cracking down on land grabbers in Madurai, the police here are now gearing up book revenue officials who connived with them.


Soon, cases will be filed against the sub-registrars in the registration department who were hand in glove with the land grabbers, police sources said.


To start with, the police are zeroing in on some sub-registrars who are suspected to have helped V P Pandi (34) alias ‘Attack’ Pandi and his relatives to grab a prime property in Madurai.


“Some of the officials in the registration department are involved. We want to gather substantial evidence before initiating action against them,” said a senior police official.


On Friday [15-7-2911] , Pandi and two other associates were produced before a local court and remanded in judicial custody. The police have booked Pandi on several charges, including criminal intimidation, forgery and trespass. He was grilled by a team of police personnel on Thursday[14-7-2011] night in connection with several complaints against him. However, the police said Pandi was not cooperative during the inquiry and claimed innocence.


Pandi and his relatives Marimuthu (44) and Tiruchelvam (32), both of them DMK functionaries, were arrested based on a complaint filed by E Kalpana (42) from Chockikulam.


Kalpana alleged that the trio had grabbed her 900 sqft house on Palace Road opposite Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal. Kalpana had originally leased out the property to R K Balan in 2004, who in turn sub-leased it to Pandi’s cousin Marimuthu in 2006.


In turn, Marimuthu rented out the building to their relative Thiruselvam and his friend Chinnasamy. In 2009, Kalpana repaid the lease amount to Balan and asked him to vacate the building.


But Balan took up the matter with Pandi and, instead of vacating the property, demanded that Kalpana transfer the ownership to his relatives. Kalpana has now filed her complaint with Madurai Police and they have arrested Attack Pandi and his associates.
